The Meaning of One Trillion…

by Rob on August 30, 2010 · 5 comments

The US National Debt stands at approximately $13 Trillion US Dollars.

To most people, it is hard to fathom the difference between Millions, Billions, and Trillions.

A million is a 1 followed by 6 zeros=   $1,000,000
A billion is a 1 followed by 9 zeros=    $1,000,000,000
A trillion is a 1 followed by 12 zeros= $1,000,000,000,000

Most peoples brains are not able to comprehend the impact of all these ZEROS. But we are able to fathom time pretty well.  So, let’s imagine SECONDS of time:

ONE MILLION ——– 1,000,000 Seconds. —— 11 days
ONE BILLION ——– 1,000,000,000 Seconds. —— 31 years, plus 8 months
ONE TRILLION —— 1,000,000,000,000 Seconds. —–almost 32,000 YEARS…

$13 Trillion is A LOT of money, and we actually owe closer to $100 Trillion if you count all the Social Security and Medicare promises…

In the USA we have about 310 million people.  This is broken into about 140 million households, and about half or 70 million of these households pay income taxes.  $100 trillion divided by 70 million taxpaying households is $1.42 million in debt owed by EACH taxpaying household.  (If you want to count just the $13 Trillion in current National Debt, then this is almost $200,000 owed per taxpaying household)

These are scary numbers..

You’re right – those are scary numbers.

We don’t know about you, but unless our new http://PatioGazebosHQ.com/ site starts generating a large amount of high commissions, the government won’t be getting our $200,000 share of the National Debt any time soon! :-)

Wow, that’s a lot of debt to owe because of the reckless spending in Washington.

Hi Survival Rob,

Let’s take heart in feeling like those numbers are completely unreal and we are foisting that level of national debt onto our great grandchildren!

Oh wait. That’s exactly the simple relationship which is precisely what is happening…..

Not sure how the government can spend so much of what they don’t have.

That’s a frightening (and eye opening) look at our national debt. What shocks me even more is that only 1/2 of the households in our country are paying income taxes. Does that mean that I’m paying income taxes for 2 households?
